Summary of the process for registration of a South African design using the Iptica online design filing system:

Our steps

1. Create an account (providing username and password). All correspondence will be sent to your email address.
2. Identify the article.
3. Enter applicant details.
4. Select type of design ‐ Aesthetic / Functional.
5. Select class(es).
6. (Optionally) Enter release date OR Enter priority claim and upload priority document.
7. (Optionally) Customise the definitive statement.
8. (Optionally) Add an explanatory statement.
9. Sign forms by either: using our e‐signing option; or printing, signing, scanning and uploading the forms. We do not require hardcopies of the original signed forms to be sent to us. Neither do any of the forms require commissioning, legalisation or notarization.
10. Upload drawings / photos of your design.
11. Pay US$299 by credit card.
12. We file the South African design, signed by a registered South African patent attorney.
13. Within a South African business day of filing, we receive a filing receipt (with the application number) from the South African Designs Office, which we will forward to you by email.
14. About 9 months from filing, we should receive a notice of acceptance from the South African Designs Office, which we will forward to you by email.
15. Instruct us to arrange publication and grant of your South African design for US$70. Acceptance must be published within 3 months of acceptance, but to meet the deadline, arrangements should be made within 7 weeks of acceptance.
16. We should receive the registered design certificate within 14 months of filing. We will email an electronic version of the certificate to you. If required, we could courier the registration certificate to you (anywhere in the world) for US$110.
17. The PayAnnuity design renewal system will email you South African design renewal reminders. South African design renewals fall due annually from the third anniversary of the earlier of: the release date, the priority date and the South African design filing date. You may login to the PayAnnuity system and instruct South African design renewals online, paying by credit card. Cost: approx. US$70 per annuity.
